Orø Havn

Orø Havn is the maritime gathering point on the island of Orø in Isefjord. A cosy marina in Holbæk Municipality with views across the fjord, easy access via bridge, and the relaxed island atmosphere that makes Orø a favourite destination.

Orø Havn – The Cosy Island Harbour in Isefjord

On the island of Orø in the middle of Isefjord lies Orø Havn – a small, well-kept marina that serves as the island’s maritime hub. Orø belongs to Holbæk Municipality and is connected to Zealand via a bridge from Hammer Bakke. Although the bridge makes the island easily accessible, Orø maintains its own rhythm – slower, quieter, and closer to the water than the mainland.

Character of the Harbour

Orø Havn sits on the island’s east side with views across Isefjord towards Holbæk. The harbour is small enough to feel intimate yet large enough to accommodate both permanent berths and visiting sailors. On the quay, local fishermen mingle with weekend sailors and cyclists stopping on their island tour.

The atmosphere is informal and inviting. On warm summer days, people sit on the jetty with ice cream and coffee, children catch crabs from the quayside, and sailing boats glide quietly in and out of the harbour. It’s the kind of atmosphere you remember long after visiting.

Orø – The Island in the Fjord

Orø is one of Isefjord’s largest islands, and the landscape is surprisingly varied for its size. From the harbour, you can walk or cycle to the island’s many corners: the lush apple orchards in the centre, the open salt marshes to the south, and the dramatic northern coast with its stony beaches and views across the fjord.

Orø has a long history as both a farming island and a summer retreat, and this dual identity is still apparent. Well-maintained farms sit alongside artist studios and holiday homes. The small island church, Orø Kirke, dates from the Middle Ages and sits elevated with views over the fields.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Orø is surrounded by shallow water and salt marshes that attract rich birdlife. The calm waters of Isefjord make the area ideal for kayaking, SUP, and gentle sailing. Swimming is possible at several points along the coast – both at sandy beaches and from the larger stones on the northern shore.

For cyclists, Orø is paradise. The island is flat enough for everyone to participate, and a circular tour of approximately twenty kilometres takes you past all the best viewpoints. Along the way, you pass through woodland, beach, and the open fields that give the island its distinctive character.

Experiences in the Area

Beyond the island itself, the Isefjord region offers plenty of experiences. Holbæk has a vibrant waterfront with museums, restaurants, and shops. Along the fjord’s coastlines, you’ll find charming small harbours and villages, and heading west brings you to Bramsnæs and Tempelkrogen with their rich birdlife and quiet walking trails.
